If you are one of those enthusiasts that love going off-road whenever you got the chance then you must equip your car with proper tires. Going for a set of all-terrain tires can be the best choice for your car.

In this article, we will test two excellent all-terrain tires: the Cooper Discoverer A/T3 and the General Grabber AT2. Both tires can be used on the roads and off the roads.

General Grabber AT2 vs Cooper Discoverer AT3 Off-Road Traction

General Grabber AT2 performs incredibly well on rocks, dirt or sand. That harder compound used improves grip, especially on rocks. A bit annoying is the fact that this tire tends to constantly retain gravel. And, at higher tire speed rotations, it will send it at high speeds at your doors and panels.

The Cooper Discoverer A/T3 performs good on rock climbing and sand but shines on mud and gravel. The tire tread design, with dual draft elements and serrated steps, doesn’t pick up gravel or small rocks. This is pretty important because you won’t have to constantly pry out the gravel with a screwdriver.

General Grabber AT2 vs Cooper Discoverer AT3 Dry Traction

Cooper Discoverer AT3 All Terrain Tire

Since both are all-terrain Truck Tires, they perform excellently on dry roads. Both have good grip and traction and the steering is quite responsive. The General Grabber AT2 is a bit noisy, especially because of the compound used, a slightly harder one.

General Grabber AT2 vs Cooper Discoverer AT3 Wet Traction

In wet situations, the Cooper Discoverer A/T3 beats easily the General Grabber AT2. This is mainly because of the silica tread compound used, which makes the tire softer, and the zig-zag sipe pattern. The Grabber AT2 performs decent on wet surfaces, but the special sipes pattern cannot make miracles. This is mainly because of the harder compound used, the same compound that makes this tire so good on sand and dirt.

General Grabber AT2 vs Cooper Discoverer AT3 Winter Traction

The Cooper A/T3 is not rated with the 3PMS symbol, while the General AT2 is. This makes the General Grabber AT2 better in both light and deep snow. It is better than Cooper Discoverer A/T3 on ice as well, but not by a huge margin.

General Grabber AT2 vs Cooper Discoverer AT3 on the Road

The Cooper Discoverer A/T3 is the winner when it comes to handling on the roads. This is partially due to its softer compound and partially to the tread design a sipes pattern. The General Grabber AT2, on the other hand, is a bit too rough for highway speeds, and this affects both handling and cornering. It is also noisier than the Cooper Discoverer A/T3.

General Grabber AT2 vs Cooper Discoverer AT3 Warranty and Tread life

Due to its harder compound, the General Grabber AT2 has a better tread life than the Cooper Discoverer AT3. The warranty is identical: both tires have a warranty of 60K miles.

General Grabber AT2 Pros

  • Better off-road capabilities
  • Better in winter situations
  • Incredible tread life

Cooper Discoverer AT3 Pros

  • Better on wet surfaces
  • Better handling and comfort
  • Not as noisier as the Grabber AT2

Conclusions

Even if both of these tires are All Terrain, they perform quite differently. General Grabber AT2 is best suited for rock climbing and other off-road situations. The harder compound makes the tire better on dirt, sand, rocks or even ice and snow.

The Cooper Discoverer AT3 is the most civilized one. It provides better handling and comfort on highways and gravel roads. It is also a bit less noisy than the General Grabber AT2.

In our opinion, the Cooper Discoverer AT3 is the best combination of on roads and off-road capabilities. The General Grabber AT2 is better suited for rough terrains and less for highways.
