Megaflint Electric Trailer Winch

An electric trailer winch is used to perform heavy-duty pulling tasks. It uses an electric motor that powers a spool or steel drum, winding steel or synthetic cable wire that is attached to a steel hook on the cable’s leading end.

When it comes to retrieving boats, electric winches draw a substantial amount of current. The power is provided by the towing vehicle’s battery, but a dedicated winch circuit must be added to provide power to the back end of the tow vehicle.

All winches have motors that drive or power the drum that spools the wire. Electric winches use electric motors and are powered by electricity, just like a drill motor. Current changes on opposing poles spin a magnet that powers the motor and turns the winch.

A manual winch requires a lot more effort. The crank pulls the line in to be stored on the drum. The windlass, a horizontal-axle rotating machine, maintains tension while the ratchet lock prevents slipping and a gearbox allows for winching at different speeds and ratios.

While an electric winch costs more than a manual one, several advantages should help you decide if you want one or not very quickly.

A manual winch requires a lot of muscle power to be successful. The length and weight of a boat can determinate if it can be manually winched or not.

The risk of accident and hull damage can be greatly minimized by an electric winch while also making the process of retrieving a boat a little faster.
